ForkLift for Mac

Disappointed. I had purchased a "Lifetime" liscence but apparently my idea of "Lifetime" is from a different dictionary.

Using a trial version. In the nested directory view, the right click action does not include a "new folder" action. And when clicking on the new directory icon on top, the directory is created at the outermost directory layer of the displayed directory. In contrast, when seeing directories in the column view, the "new folder" option on left click does show and it creates new directory correctly. So why does nested view behave incorrectly?😐

Update: been using QSpace Pro since my last rant on here (found about it just in time) which is everything an ftp and MacFinder replacement should be, plays well with Default Folder. Was a bit annoying having to manually recreating all my ftp logins.. but am so glad I found it.

I'll vent my frustration here (have contacted devs several times, no answer.. at times they have on some issues, but not on that one somehow). FL has become unusable to me (may have worsened with Sequoia, not sure) as the refreshing of the content of the display of my files and folders is not instant, not even on remote connections but locally. I liked to use it as Finder replacement, but it's laggy (got a fast M2 Studio) there is even a little spinning wheel that I have to contemplate up to a couple of seconds per action, for just wanting to see what is inside a folder counting 10 elements, not talking of folders containing hundreds or thousands… I use/d it to manage large quantities of files, copying, and moving/organizing a lot and sometimes for hours at a time, this lagging between refreshes is unacceptable for my workflow. I even messed up some actions in my organizing work, at times not realizing that my files had been moved but that FL was not showing me updated lists or moving folders to the wrong place as the mouse was laggy pulling them somewhere and I let go in the wrong spot etc. It usually happens and gets worse when I have been doing quite a bit of work moving files around.. I think it is related to some sort of caching management the app does. However Apple Finder never does that, it is snappy, fast, almost instant for moving even large quantities of files/folders on the same disk. So am sort of back to square one.. PathFinder failed me, ForkLift failed me.. Apple.. well, I wish they'd improve Finder with dual pane etc etc. but it works flawlessly and I can trust it to refresh and show me the true state of my files. So I end up using two windows side by side in Finder and accepting its shortcomings. Oh well. I still use FL for remote, mostly because I have lots of favorites set up in it and unfortunately cannot import them in Transmit. I only left Transmit behind because I thought FL could be the do-it-all app. But I spend a lot more time doing ‘Finder stuff’ than remote access stuff.. so I need something that REALLY performs. So Apple Finder it is.

I have been using ForkLift for years. The program always had serious errors. For example, when saving files after they had been edited with a text editor. After several mails with the support the problem was fixed at some point (v3) - after the text editor BBEdit was always blamed at first. Unfortunately, the new version 4 is no better. One bug: the modification date is not updated after a file has been modified. Even after restarting ForkLift, the original date is still displayed. Whether a file has been changed / written is therefore not recognizable. If such essential functions of an FTP program do not work reliably, I cannot recommend the program.
